Burning Spear Information
Rodney's band, Burning Spear (named after a military medal granted by Kenya's first President, Jomo Kenyatta), featured the late Rupert Willington on bass. In 1969, the pair tried out for Dodd, and the result was the release of their first song, "Door Peep" (which also featured Cedric Brooks on saxophone). Delroy Hinds, a tenor, later joined them. Before moving on to work with Jack Ruby in 1975, the band recorded many more songs for Dodd and two albums.
Initiated as an exclusive track for Ruby's Ocho Rios-based Hi-Power sound system, "Marcus Garvey" was instead released as a single and became an instant hit, to be followed by "Slavery Days." Earl "Chinna" Smith, Valentine "Chinna" Chin, Robbie "Shakespeare" Wallace, and Leroy "Shakey" Wallace were all members of the supporting band The Black Disciples for these songs.
After the initial success of their third album, Marcus Garvey (1975), which Ruby produced, the band signed with Island Records for a wider distribution of their work. After Island sped up and slowed down some of the songs, much to the displeasure of fans and the band, Rodney decided to start his label, Burning Music, where he would have complete creative control. Nonetheless, the label continued producing music, including the dub version of Marcus Garvey's album, Garvey's Ghost, and Man in the Hills.
