Brian Stokes Mitchell (October 31, 1957) is an American actor and singer born in Seattle, Washington. He has been one of the leading men of the Broadway theatre since the 1990s. Mitchell began acting in school musicals while he was living in San Diego, California. He began performing professionally while in high school and never attended college. According to Mitchell, he studied conducting, film scoring, and orchestration through UCLA. His first Broadway performance was in 1988 for the musical named Mail.
Mitchelle’s Broadway credits include an all-black revival of Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993) by Kander and Ebb, Jelly’s Last Jam (1992) based on the works of jazz artist Jolly Roll Morton, and Oh, Kay! (1990) by George and Ira Gershwin. In 1999, Mitchell appeared in the revival of “Kiss Me, Kate” by Cole Porter. He also appeared as Fred Graham / Petruchio and won the Tony Award for “Best Actor in a Musical.”
In 2001, Mitchell made another appearance on Broadway in King Hedley II and 2002 for Man of La Mancha. Both musicals earned him a Tony Award nomination. In 2002, he played the title role of Kennedy Center production of Sweeney Todd, a part of the Stephen Sondheim celebration. Mitchell has appeared in a few hit films, including Ghost Dad (1990), The Prince of Egypt (1998), One Last Thing (1998), Jumping the Broom (2011), and Mapplethorpe (2018). He has also made countless appearances in many television shows.
