Black Uhuru Information
Black Uhuru is a Jamaican reggae group. The band's current lineup consists of Andrew Bees and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson. In 1972, Garth Dennis, Don Carlos, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson got together in Kingston's Waterhouse neighborhood to create a band they named "Uhuru" (the Swahili word for freedom). Their first single, a rendition of The Impressions' "Romancing to the Folk Song," and their second, "Time is on Our Side," were both failures, and the band eventually disbanded, with Carlos going solo and Dennis eventually joining The Wailing Souls.
Simpson also collaborated with the Wailing Souls for a short time before reuniting with Errol Nelson (of The Jayes) and Michael Rose to create a new iteration of Uhuru under the name Black Sounds Uhuru. 1977 saw the release of Love Crisis, their first record, which Prince Jammy produced. In 1978, Sandra "Puma" Jones, a social worker from South Carolina, US, who had previously performed as a dancer for Ras Michael & the Sons of Negus and a member of the group Mama Africa, replaced Nelson in The Jayes. Nelson rejoined the group in 1977.
Black Uhuru, the group's most well-known moniker, was adopted at this time. Working closely with Sly and Robbie, the band released a series of hit songs, including "General Penitentiary," a cover of Rose's solo hit "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," and "Shine Eye Gal," which featured Keith Richards on guitar.
