Bakithi Kumalo Information
Bakithi Kumalo (May 10, 1956) is a South African vocalist, composer, and bassist. He was born in Alexandra, Gauteng. Throughout the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, Kumalo performed as a session musician in South Africa. He finally rose to the position of top session bassist and accompanied foreign artists on tours of the country. During the recording sessions for Paul Simon's Graceland album in 1985, producer Hendrick Lebone introduced Kumalo to Simon.
After the accompanying concert tour, Kumalo "spent several years traveling between Soweto and New York City" before relocating permanently to the United States. Kumalo proceeded to New York with Simon to complete the sessions. Kumalo's playing incorporates aspects of indigenous South African music with American jazz and Motown genres.
Since then, Kumalo has frequently toured with Simon. In addition, he continued to play as a session musician for artists like Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Randy Brecker, Grover Washington Jr., and Mickey Hart while also releasing several solo albums.
