The venue was opened to the general public on August 26, 2017, with a construction cost of US$1.6 billion.

The stadium is currently home to the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) and Atlanta United FC of Major League Soccer (MLS) along with Peach Bowl, Celebration Bowl, and Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. The stadium is considered one of the five stadiums that has a retractable roof in the NFL. It is under the ownership of the state government of Georgia through the Georgia World Congress Center Authority while operated by AMB Group. It is expecting to undergo some significant renovations shortly.

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium has hosted SEC Championship Games, 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship, Super Bowl LIII, 2018 MLS All-Star Game, Georgia High School Association championship, AMA Supercross Championship, Portland Timbers, Club América, etc. The concert performance of Garth Brooks accompanied the inauguration of the stadium. Chesney's concert attracted 51,312 people and grossed $5.068 million. The venue also hosted performances by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, On the Run II Tour, Ed Sheeran, George Strait, and many others. The stadium is expected to host the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
