Harold Alfond Sports Arena - Orono ME
UConn Huskies at Maine Black Bears Mens Hockey
Harold Alfond Arena is a multi-purpose arena that is located in Orono, Maina. The arena opened for the public on February 5, 1977, and has a seating capacity of around 5,124. It is currently home to the University of Maine Black Bears Ice Hockey teams. The arena is named for Harold Alfond, a longtime Maine booster. The venue is best known for its distinctive hyperbolic paraboloid architecture. This extreme multi-angular roof design can be found at the Brown University Smith Swim Center, Pavilion at Villanova University, and the Flynn Recreation Complex, located at Boston College.
On April 19, 1983, the legendary Grateful Dead played at Alfond Arena, and, in 1994, Hillary Clinton appeared at the arena as well. To make the floor transition from basketball to hockey usually takes two hours. Alfond Arena underwent an expansion from its original capacity of 3,800 in 1992 to accommodate more spectators. This also allowed them to bring the basketball team back from its temporary home at Bangor Auditorium. During 2008, a new scoreboard was also installed.
