McKale Memorial Center is an athletic arena located in Tucson, Arizona. The arena is situated on the campus of the University of Arizona. It broke ground in November 1970, and it opened for the public on February 1, 1973. The total construction cost of the project was $8 million. The arena is owned and operated by the University of Arizona. It has a current seating capacity of 14,655. The architecture of the building is designed by Place and Place, Inc. McKale Center serves as the home field to the University's Wildcats basketball team of the Pac-12 Conference. Primarily, the arena is used for basketball.
The McKale Center was given its current name to honor a major athletic figure at U of A, J.F. "Pop" McKale. He was the head basketball coach from 1914 to 1921 and led the football team from 1914 to 1930. This Center is the second-largest arena in the conference in terms of capacity. The first one of Utah's Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. From 1973 until 2012, the University's spring and winter commencement ceremonies took place at the arena. The venue underwent some major renovations during 2014 and 2017.
Some of the major events hosted by the McKale Center include the 1988 Pac-12 Conference men's basketball tournament, a memorial service for the 2011 Tucson shooting victims, and the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament.
