The Walnut Street Theatre is situated at 825 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is the oldest theatre and a national historic landmark in America for entertainment purposes. The venue consists of three sites; the Mainstage, an independent studio, and another studio for small productions. It has a seating capacity of around 1,054. The theatre was built and opened for the public in 1809. The Walnut Street Theatre is owned and operated by the Walnut Street Theatre Company, which is a non-profit organization. William Strickland designed the architecture of the venue. The architecture pattern is in the classical revival style. The theatre has undergone many renovations since its opening (first renovated in 1828, then 1903, and 1920) with a renovation cost of around $3 million. It was designated a National Historic Landmark and was added to the NRHP on October 15, 1966. It was the first theatre to install gas footlights and feature air conditioning.
The first theatrical production at the theatre was The Rivals in 1812, attended by President Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette. The first presidential debate between Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter was held on September 23, 1976. Some high-rated performances in the theatre include Katharine Hepburn, Ethel Barrymore, Julie Harris, Marina Sirtis, Lucas Steele, Jarrod Spector, George Peppard, Harold Perrineau, Claudette Colbert, Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, Edwin Forrest, Mark Indelicato, Samuel L. Jackson, and many others.
