Lyric Theatre Florida - Stuart FL
Selwyn BIrchwood
The Lyric Theatre is a historic theater in downtown Stuart, Florida. The venue is situated at 59 Southwest Flagler Avenue and was constructed in 1926. Sherwood and John did the building's architecture and Casto and Mark in a Beaux-Arts and Mission/Spanish Revival style. The Lyric Theatre was originally built to serve as a silent movie house. The Lyric Theater was closed and sold to many firms and personalities over the next 50 years after its inception. The venue was purchased by a non-denominational church in 1978. The church used the theater for its weekly services until a new facility was built. Currently, the theater is primarily used as a stage and music venue. To provide backstage space for these new uses, an addition was made on the west side of the venue.
The Lyric Theatre was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on November 12, 1993. The core mission behind the theater's construction was to provide the community with a beautiful home for the performing arts; to educate, entertain, and stimulate the growth of artistic integrity for the entire community.
