Highmark Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium that is located in Pittsburgh Station Square. It serves as a home to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC of the USL Championship. The stadium opened on April 13, 2013, and currently has a seating capacity of 5,000. The venue is owned by Terry “Tuffy” Shallenberger and operated by Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. The official announcement for the initial construction for Highmark Stadium was made on January 10, 2012. ThenDesign Architecture, Inc was tasked with designing the architect of the stadium. Highmark Stadium’s construction was estimated to be completed by summer 2012, with approximately $7 million financed by private investors and a few corporate sponsors.
Highmark is one of the notable sponsors that holds the current naming rights for the stadium. The venue was initially explicitly constructed for soccer matches, but it has hosted other events, such as concerts, fairs, softball, rugby, lacrosse, and football.
The first official Riverhounds match took place at the field on April 13, 2013. The match was played against the Harrisburg City Islanders. The first concert at the stadium was performed by The Steve Miller Band in July 2015, featuring The Eagles and Don Felder. Highmark Stadium has four gates: the Cochran Gate, the South Gate, the North Gate, and the Trib Total Media Gate.
