The Pennsylvania Convention Center is a multi-purpose public facility that is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The venue opened for the local public in 1993. It is specially designed to accommodate exhibitions, conferences, conventions, and many other event types. In total, four city blocks are occupied by the “L”-shaped complex. SMG operates the convention center. It underwent some major renovations and expansion in 2011. The total seating capacity of the ballroom or banquet is 20-20,000, whereas 40-10,000 people can be accommodated in the theatre. Upon the construction of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Chinatown buildings located on Arch Street were demolished.
The Pennsylvania Convention Center features smaller meeting rooms, four main halls or rooms, auditoriums, and the Grand Hall. BLT Architects did the architecture of the theatre building. The complex also features a 1,200-room hotel that offers restaurants, many various sized ballrooms, a health/fitness center, pre-function areas for meetings, and much more. On an annual basis, the Fancy Brigade Finale is hosted by the convention center on January 1st. The venue also hosts the Philadelphia Flower Show in early March, the Philadelphia Auto Show in early February, and many nonrecurring conferences and conventions. Also, the 2020 United States presidential election in Pennsylvania’s mail-in absentee ballots were counted at the venue.
During the 2011 expansion, the Pennsylvania Convention Center saw three new halls, 23 more meeting rooms, 17 more Truck Berths, wider space for the main level Exhibit Hall, ballroom, banquet, and street-level exhibit hall. The total saleable space was expanded to 1,000,000 sq. ft. from 624,000 sq. ft.
