John E. Worthen Arena is an American arena in Muncie, Indiana, on the campus of Ball State University. The arena was opened in 1992 and currently has a seating capacity of 11,500. Worthen Arena is owned and operated by Ball State University. The opening of the venue replaced Irving Gymnasium. The arena was originally named University Arena or Ball State Arena, and it was renamed Worthen Arena in honor of John E. Worthen, the former university president. Mainly, Worthen Arena serves as the home for Ball State Cardinals athletic teams and men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams.
Other events also occur at the John E. Worthen Arena, such as concerts, trade shows, and several other special events. The venue features six portable concessions and eight permanent stands. In addition to that, the arena also has two permanent souvenir stands, an arena lounge, two loading docks, and a press room.
In 2015, John E. Worthen Arena underwent some upgrades that included a new Daktronics six-panel video board. It was installed right above the center court. The scoreboards for the arena were also upgraded in the corners of the court. An upgraded court capped off all the upgrades.
