The opera house was opened to the public on November 17, 1908, with a construction cost of $2 million. The venue is under the ownership of the Holy Ghost Headquarters, and it is operated by Live Nation Philadelphia. The opera house was closed in 1988 and was reopened on December 3, 2018, after a major renovation. It underwent restoration in the year 1939, 1943, 1948, 1975, and 2017-18. McElfatrick and Atkin Olshin Schade Architects in a classical revival style. The venue was known by various former names such as the Philadelphia Opera House, Philadelphia Evangelistic Center, and the Metropolitan Opera House.
The Metropolitan Opera House was included in the National Register of Historic Places in the year 1972. The site was the largest opera house of its type at the time of its opening.
