James H. Hilton Coliseum, commonly known as Hilton Coliseum, is a multi-purpose arena located in Ames, Iowa. The venue opened in 1971 with a seating capacity of 14,384. The stadium is home to the Iowa State University Cyclones basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics teams. The arena has a capacity of 15,000+ for concerts.
The Hilton Coliseum’s building was constructed in 1971 as part of the Iowa State Center. The venue’s name was kept after Dr. James H. Hilton, the ISU president from 1953 to 1965. The first band that performed at Hilton Coliseum was Meloncolony. The band was composed of Midwest natives, including Bob Curtis (drums), Clint Dudley (guitar), Matt Peterson (bass), Wayne Groff (organ), and Chuck Vail (singer). Notable artists who have performed concerts at the venue include James Taylor, Justin Timberlake, Martina McBride, Sugarland, Queen, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Aerosmith, and The Cult.
