The Jon M. Huntsman Center is an indoor arena located on the University of Utah’s campus in Salt Lake City. Seating a capacity of 15,000, it is owned and operated by the University of Utah. Huntsman Center opened on November 30, 1969, with the designing architecture being Bruce H. Jensen. In 1987, the site was renamed to Jon M. Huntsman, a chemical entrepreneur and philanthropist.
The Huntsman Center remained one of Salt Lake City’s premier sports and entertainment venues for many years. It was previously the home field of Utah Jazz (NBA) and Utah Stars (ABA). The Jackson 5 performed at the center on May 12, 1973, and the venue was also the location of the 1989 Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament.
In 2016, Huntsman Center hosted two games of the Utah Jazz Summer League. The arena has also hosted 1979 Final Four that featured a rivalry between all-time greats Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. The venue served as a host to the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament 12 times between 1984 and 2006. It has also hosted the West Regional Final twice in 1971 and 1981, along with many other NCAA tournament games over the period.
