Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center is a basketball arena located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It has a seating capacity of 12,012, which is reduced from the initial 13,176 seat design in honor of the number 12 jersey of Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. The arena broke ground in 1987, and it opened for the public on September 12, 1989. The venue is owned and operated by the University of Cincinnati. It primarily serves as the home field for the Cincinnati Bearcats men's basketball, women's volleyball, and women's basketball.
Fifth Third Arena hosts many major events as well. The arena is located in the Myrl H. Shoemaker Center, also the venue's name until 2005, when the arena was renamed after Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bank. Myrl H. Shoemaker was the former lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio. The arena underwent renovation in 2017-2018, which cost a total of $87 million. Glaser Associates designed the architecture of the building.
Fifth Third Arena hosted a handful of tournaments since its opening. It also hosted the 1999 and 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament games. The women's edition of the 1994 Great Midwest Conference Women's Basketball Tournament was played at the Fifth Third Arena. The facility served as host to the 2006 Big East volleyball championship and the 1998 Conference USA volleyball tournament.
