SECU Stadium is an outdoor athletic stadium located in College Park, Maryland. The venue is situated on the campus of the University of Maryland and broke ground in January 1949, and it opened for the public on September 30, 1950. The total construction cost of the project was $1 million. The facility is operated by the University of Maryland, College Park. It has a present seating capacity of 51,802 and a FieldTurf surface. The original architecture of the building is done by James R. Edmunds Jr., whereas Populous do the renovation designing. SECU Stadium serves as the home field to the Maryland Terrapins football and men's lacrosse teams. The two former tenants are Baltimore Stars (USFL) (1985) and Presidential Cup Bowl (NCAA) (1950).
SECU Stadium was formerly known as Byrd Stadium (1950–2015). It was named after a multi-sport athlete, football coach, and university president Harry "Curley" Byrd. The stadium was built to replace an older, much smaller Old Byrd Stadium. The venue underwent some major expansion in 1995, 2002, and 2008. Some of the major expansions done to the stadium include building 63 luxury suites, increasing the seating capacity, installing a second LED video board, and installing FieldTurf Revolution.
