Gallagher-Iba Arena is the basketball and wrestling venue also known as “The Madison Square Garden of the Plains” and “The Rowdiest Arena in the Country.” The venue is located at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Construction broke ground on February 25, 1938, and opened for the public on December 9, 1938. The project took a construction cost of $1.5 million initially. The present seating capacity of the venue is 13,611. The arena was initially named the 4-H Club and Student Activities Building but was soon renamed Gallagher Hall, after the wrestling coach Ed Gallagher. Gallagher-Iba Arena underwent renovations in 1987, and the same year, the current name was decided for the venue. The name was in honor of longtime basketball coach and innovator Henry Iba.
On December 9, 1938, the first basketball game was played in the arena. The first wrestling match was held on January 27, 1939. A decision was made to expand Gallagher-Iba Arena to its current seating capacity in the 1990s. This was planned due to the desperate need for a larger basketball arena in Oklahoma State. In August 2001, the arena was named the best college gymnasium by CBS SportsLine.com. Its court was officially named after Eddie Sutton as Eddie Sutton Court on January 15, 2005.
