New Era Field was under the ownership of Erie County and is operated by Pegula Sports and Entertainment. HNTB Populous designed the architecture of the stadium. The venue has undergone renovations in the years 1998 and 2013. Highmark Stadium is used as a venue for sports games such as football, ice hockey, along with concerts and music events. It serves as a home field to the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL).

Highmark Stadium has hosted a wide variety of events and games. The venue has hosted almost 30 concerts by several famous bands and artists who performed at the stadium multiple times. The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, The Jacksons, Grateful Dead, One Direction, Guns N’ Roses, U2, Beyonce, Dave Matthews Band, and Van Halen Scorpions have performed notable events in front of huge crowds at the venue. The stadium serves host to the region’s Section VI and Monsignor Martin Athletic Association high school football playoffs annually. The opening ceremony of the 1993 Summer Universiade took place here.
