The Stephen C. O'Connell Center, usually known as the O'Dome, is a multi-purpose arena within the University of Florida. It is located at 250 Gale Lemerand Drive, Gainesville, Florida. The venue is named after Stephen Stephen C. O'Connell (the sixth president of the University), who served from 1967 to 1973. The construction of the Arena began in October 1977 and ended with a total construction cost of $47.4 million. The facility opened for the general public on December 30, 1980. The venue is owned and operated by the University of Florida. The seating capacity of O'Connell Center is about 10,133. The Stephen C. O'Connell Center serves as a host to a wide variety of events. On December 3, 2006, the venue marked a record attendance of 12,621 people who watched the thrilling match between the Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes. Other than sports, the facility serves as the most significant concert venue of North Central Florida. The venue also hosts different types of performances and events, such as the show by Gainesville native Tom Petty in 2006. The other events at the O'Connell Center include the University of Florida's Graduation Ceremonies, career fairs, trade shows, public speeches, political rallies, and other private events.
